Curated by Cecilia Fajardo-Hill

This new selection of works drawn from the MOLAA Permanent Collection proposes multiple readings about the art of Latin America. The works exhibited span multiple periods, techniques and perspectives, from the traditional to the most contemporary and experimental works by Latin American masters, mid-career and young emerging artists.

The axis of the show is four intimate monographic exhibitions which profile a collection of pieces by master artists Jose Gurvich (Lithuania b. 1927, Uruguay d. 1974),  José Luís Cuevas (Mexico, b. 1933), Roberto Sebastián Matta (Chile, 1911-2002), and Francisco Toledo (Mexico, b. 1940). These artists are juxtaposed with video works by Eduardo Costa (Argentina, b. 1940),Fabiana Cruz (Venezuela, b. 1984), Amilcar Packer (Chile/Brazil, b. 1974) and Javier Téllez (Venezuela, b. 1969), and with mixed media pieces by contemporary artists, to create a dialogical exchange between the historic and contemporary that may expand the frame of reference and understanding about each artist exhibited. The final display is devoted to contemporary photography, reuniting a disparate group of artists whose work, though diverse in subject matter and aesthetic approach, may reveal a common need for exploration of the human condition within the context of interior environments and the transfigured landscape.
