Mariana Castillo Deball (Mexico, b. 1975)’s art is related to the classification of objects within institutional practices focusing on the museum’s method of archiving, interpreting and presenting history and culture. Appropriating the cultural artifact as her subject and placing them within an installation environment, she critically investigates the traditional museum practice to display historical objects and artifacts, especially those related to the New World Conquest and the Mesoamerican period. For the Project Room, Castillo Deball presented an installation of objects including sculptures inspired on the Aztec goddesses Coatlicue and Coyolxauhqui, the goddess of Death and the moon, respectively. This project continues the artist’s critical exploration of Mexico’s complex relationship with its archaeology. The exhibition addressed the history of these goddesses within the myth, in an archeological and sociological context, since their discoveries signified an important shift in the history of Mexican archeology.
