Curated by Cecilia Fajardo-Hill

July 21 – October 9, 2011

For this Project Room, MOLAA proposes Johanna Calle, an artist from Colombia whose artistic medium is drawing in non-traditional configurations. Colombia has an important tradition in drawing, and this edition of the Project Room series intends to give visibility to two representatives of recent innovation in this media.

Calle experiments with different drawing formats and materials to produce drawings that are conceptual in content, but also challenge our concept of what a drawing is, taking the medium beyond the boundaries between drawing and sculpture or drawing and writing.  Johanna Calle’s most recent work explores the qualities of cursive handwriting, as well as different writing systems of transcription such as shorthand or stenography, and their similarities with drawing techniques and aesthetics, to comment on social issues utilizing sources such as music, literature, and architecture.
